Marcon Place Underbridge Replacement – Hackney Downs

Marcon Place Underbridge Replacement – Precast Concrete

Contractor: Octavius Infrastructure Ltd

Client: Network Rail

Project Overview:

The Marcon Place Underbridge Replacement at Hackney Downs Station was a fast-track bridge reconstruction project, undertaken to modernise and improve the critical rail infrastructure serving four tracks and four platforms. Scheduled over the Easter Bank Holiday, the project demanded precision planning and exceptional execution, with the main works delivered during a 100-hour blockade and final installation of precast units completed in a 100-hour possession. The scheme was a true test of partnership and collaboration, culminating in the project being ‘Highly Commended’ in the Network Rail Partnership Awards for ‘Best Medium Project Category’.

The Client’s Challenge:

Network Rail faced the challenge of replacing a major underbridge at one of London’s busiest commuter stations, Hackney Downs, with minimal disruption to services and tight time constraints. The works required the reconstruction of bridges carrying four rail tracks and platforms, meaning every phase had to be meticulously coordinated. With public and rail user safety paramount and the Easter Bank Holiday providing the only feasible window for a full blockade, the team needed a solution that was robust, rapidly installable, and delivered to exacting standards.

Solution:

ABM Precast Solutions worked closely with the Network Rail Anglia Team and project partners to design, manufacture, and deliver a bespoke package of precast components. Our contribution ensured that all structural and logistical requirements were met within the demanding project timeline. The units supplied included:
✅ 8 platform supports

✅ 4 ballast walls

✅ 6 platform deck end slabs

In total, 18 precast units were produced, ranging from 7.0 to 34.0 tonnes, with a combined weight of 225 tonnes (over 90m³ of high-quality precast concrete). Offsite manufacture enabled tight quality control and allowed for rapid installation during the restricted possession period. Every stage, from technical design to delivery and on-site support, was managed to ensure seamless integration with the overall bridge replacement programme.

The Results:

The Marcon Place Underbridge Reconstruction was successfully completed within the scheduled 100-hour blockade and 100-hour possession, with all precast units installed safely and efficiently. The project not only achieved its technical and operational goals but was also recognised by Network Rail with a ‘Highly Commended’ award, highlighting the strength of the partnerships involved. The new underbridge has significantly improved the resilience and reliability of the Hackney Downs rail corridor, benefitting both commuters and the wider community.

Key Takeaways:

This project demonstrates ABM’s ability to deliver complex, time-critical infrastructure solutions through close collaboration, technical expertise, and a focus on quality and efficiency. The Marcon Place Underbridge Replacement stands as a model for how innovative precast solutions and strong industry partnerships can overcome even the toughest logistical challenges in the rail sector.
